  1. Here is my comment (can't guarantee its worth.
At first I read the question as this:-
In what ways do the setting, animation backgrounds and environment drive storytelling function withing the visual narrative of a Disney animated feature film?

I didn't understand that 'environment driven storytelling' was one concept until I read the key questions underneath.

Can these three terms - setting, backgrounds and environment driven story telling - be condensed to one?

Doesn't the term 'environment' cover all of this?

As I read this I'm thinking about Hunchback of Notre Dame where the building itself was like an extension of Quasimodo's personality.

But in all other Disney movies, the environment is less crucial - eg Beauty and the Beast didn't really need to be set in a French village. It really just provides a bit of history and backstory but isn't imperative to the narrative.

Is this what you are getting at?

How can the environment function outside its traditional story telling role of setting up history for the characters, and instead be used to drive a narrative forward in the absence of characterisation?

Also, is the Disney part important? You haven't listed this in your key questions?
